October 2021 has seen a brand new festival focused on the impact of artificial intelligence on music make its debut as part of the renowned Sónar Barcelona.
Boasting a programme of almost 100 activities, S + T + ARTS Festival was filled with concerts, conferences, demonstrations, workshops, and more.
Running over the course of two days, on the 27th and 28th of October a host of artists, musicians, and scientists got together for a series of talks and round tables to discuss the potential of AI as a transformative element in music.
A particular emphasis was placed on exploring how the fusion of artificial intelligence and traditional music performances and production methods could reach the general public – for example, through new instruments.
As part of this, Spanish jazz prodigy Marco Mezquida took to the piano to showcase how a classical instrument can work together with AI, creating a futuristic, almost extra-terrestrial sound.
The young composer and pianist from the Balearic Island of Menorca dazzled the audience with an otherworldly performance.
